The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has agreed with a proposal by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to put Long Thanh International Airport into commercial operation from December 1, 2026.

The transition of flight operations between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airports will be carried out in three stages, aligned with international airline schedule seasons.
From December 1, 2026 to the end of the winter flight schedule on March 27, 2027, airlines will be encouraged to proactively operate international passenger and cargo services from Long Thanh based on demand.
During the summer flight schedule, from March 28 to October 29, 2027, all long-haul international flights, including cargo services, will be transferred to Long Thanh.
In the following winter schedule, from October 30, 2027 to March 25, 2028, all remaining international flights will move to Long Thanh, except routes of less than 1,000km operated by Vietnamese airlines.
For domestic services, ACV has proposed allowing airlines to decide whether to operate from Long Thanh or Tan Son Nhat based on market demand.
As part of preparations for the new airport's operations, ACV has identified 15-20 core scenarios for commercial flight operations. Trial runs of these scenarios are scheduled to begin in late September.
