At 5 a.m. they found the body, which had begun to decompose in the engine room of the sunken vessel, Din Ky, at the bottom of the river.

It was taken to the morgue of a hospital, shrouded, and sent to his home for burial.

The boy, Khanh, was the son of Phan Thi Hien and Phan Xuan Long, 35, of Ha Tinh Province.

The salvage of the boat was not completed by yesterday afternoon, with just two-thirds of the vessel lifted above the surface.

It is expected to be completed this morning, according to Le Xuan Thanh, head of the Military Command of Tuan An District, Binh Duong Province.

The accident occurred at around 7 pm last Friday soon after the double-decker, restaurant-style tour boat left a quay in Binh Duong with 32 guests on board for a child’s birthday party.

There were heavy rains and strong winds, and the boat quickly took on water and sank.

The party was held by Quach Luong Tai, a businessman, to celebrate the third birthday of his son. Tai survived while the rest of his family died.

The provincial police yesterday detained Le Van Duc, 28, the boat’s pilot, Le Van Quang, its manager, and Dinh Van Quan, the manager of the on-board restaurant, for questioning.

Duc did not have a pilot’s license, they said.

They are continuing with their investigations.

HCM City to inspect all restaurant ships

After the sinking of the Din Ky, the HCM City Department of Transport has decided to inspect all restaurant-ships and hydrofoils next month.

Any vessel failing to meet waterway safety regulations would have to immediately suspend operations, the department said.

There are nearly 10 restaurant-style ships operating on the Saigon River, the agency added.
