Floodwaters sweep two storey house into stream in Lai Chau

A two-storey house was swept into a stream by flash floods in Lai Chau Province after heavy rain, but all occupants escaped safely after being evacuated in time.

Heavy rain hit Giao Chan Village in Khong Lao Commune early on July 8, sending floodwaters surging through the area and undermining the foundations of a house owned by Ly Van Quang.

Residents and local authorities helped the family move their belongings after signs emerged that the house was at risk of collapse.

Witnesses said the building remained standing at about 7 am, with floodwaters still around 10 metres away. Within 30 minutes, the foundations gave way and the two storey concrete house tilted before collapsing into the swollen Nam Lum Stream.

The house, built in 2019, was completely destroyed. No injuries were reported.

Local officials said floodwaters had already eroded land behind the property during earlier heavy rain, washing away a pig shed and leaving the house increasingly vulnerable.

Lai Chau authorities said they were assessing the damage and reporting the incident to provincial officials.

The province has been hit by persistent heavy rain in recent days. According to local authorities, one person died after being swept away while crossing a stream between July 5 and July 6, while landslides also damaged homes in several communes.
