An additional 149 more Covid-19 infections have been recorded in Vietnam in the past six hours, mostly in the two localities of Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong Province, the Ministry of Health reported at noon on Monday.

According to the ministry's report, 146 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 94 in Ho Chi Minh City, 32 in Binh Duong, 12 in Bac Giang, four in Bac Ninh, two in Nghe An, and one each in Hoa Binh and Danang.

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City admitted that the virus fight in the city is facing great challenges as more chains of transmission of unknown origin have been uncovered, and many cases are asymptomatic. The city is carrying out the biggest vaccination campaign with about 800,000 people getting Covid-19 vaccine last week.

As of Monday noon, 12,547 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 5,644 in Bac Giang Province and 3,374 in Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 48 cities and provinces nationwide.

Three imported patients are all Vietnamese people who recently return from abroad. They had been sent to a quarantine area in Kien Giang Province upon arrival and are now being treated at a local hospital.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 15,889 including 14,117 locally-transmitted cases.

So far there have been 76 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.

At present, over 177,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.

On June 26, an additional 87,375 people were given Covid-19 vaccine in Vietnam, raising the total number of vaccine doses used in the country to nearly 3.4 million. The number of people who have received two doses has risen to 157,136.
