An elderly couple in the central province of Ha Tinh are in desperate need of help to support a son who has mental problems.

Nguyen Quoc Loc, 73, and his wife Le Thi Loc, 71, have three children. They were all born healthy but then developed mental problems when growing up. Their eldest son Nguyen Thanh Son who was born in 1979 started to exhibit abnormal behaviour at the age of 16. The couple brought him to hospital where doctors said that he had a mental disease. After three years of treatment, he has improved but needs to take regular medicine.
The second son Nguyen Thanh Ha, born in 1983, also showed the same problems in 2002. Ha's condition, however, is more serious and hasn't improved much despite treatment. The poor couple has had to keep their son in a two-square-metre-iron cot for the past 20 years to avoid his attacks.
"He is silent most of the time but he can be violent anytime," the father said, showing many scars left by the son's attacks on his arms. "We were so depressed to lock him in this cot but there is no other way for us."

The elderly man said that their third child, Nguyen Thi Lan, is 29 years old now but can't help much due to her own mental health issues.
Talking about Loc's family, chairman of Tho Dien Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Dang Nhan, said that this was among the most difficult cases in the area.
"The poor couple are old now but all their three children have mental problems and can't do any work to earn their living," the official said. "They are also receiving some allowances from the government but it is not enough to cover medical treatment for them. I hope that they can receive more support.
