One dead after fishing boat collides with cargo ship off Lam Dong

One person has died after a fishing boat carrying 17 crew members sank following a collision with a cargo ship off the coast of Lam Dong Province, authorities said.

The accident occurred on July 6 in waters about 10 nautical miles southeast of Phu Hai Port, according to the Lam Dong Border Guard Command.

The 17-metre fishing boat, powered by a 420 horsepower engine and owned by Phan Van Chi, a 54-year-old local man, had departed Phu Hai Port earlier that morning with 17 crew members on board for a fishing trip.

Authorities said the vessel collided with the cargo ship Viet Thuan 11-07, causing the fishing boat to sink and throwing all crew members into the sea.

A nearby fishing boat rescued all 17 people from the water, but one crew member later died.

Border guards said 15 surviving crew members and the victim's body had been brought ashore, while Phan Van Chi remained aboard a vessel near the accident site to assist authorities with the investigation and recovery operation.
