HCM City jobless claims edge up in first half

HCM City received more than 102,000 unemployment benefit claims in the first half of 2026, up 0.72 per cent from a year earlier.

The city's Employment Service Centre said more than 86,000 applicants were approved for unemployment benefits during the six-month period.

Nearly 34,000 claims were filed in June, significantly higher than in May. The centre's director, Nguyen Van Hanh Thuc, said May's long public holiday reduced the number of working days for applications, with many workers submitting their claims in June instead.

Despite the monthly jump, first-half claims increased by only 732 from the same period last year, the official said.

To help unemployed workers find new jobs, the centre organised 101 job fairs and provided career counselling and job placement services to more than 364,000 people in the first six months of the year.

It also worked with overseas recruitment agencies to advise 1,321 people seeking employment abroad.

The centre said the city's labour market continued to recover, with hiring demand outpacing labour supply in several manufacturing and service sectors.

While supply and demand were broadly balanced for unskilled and vocationally trained workers, employers continued to face shortages of skilled production workers without formal qualifications.
