War dead remains found on Gia Lai coffee farm after villagers' discovery

The remains of a fallen soldier have been recovered from a coffee farm in Gia Lai Province after a local resident uncovered wartime military items while digging planting holes.

Search teams recovered the remains on July 7 at a coffee plantation owned by R'com Thang in Ia Phi Commune.

The discovery followed the farmer's report to local military authorities after he unearthed several items believed to date from the war, including a combat knife, a military canteen and a belt.

A site inspection found that the artefacts matched equipment commonly used by Vietnamese soldiers during the war against the US. The location is also close to two former bomb craters that had since been filled in for agricultural use.

Expanding the search, recovery teams uncovered one set of remains together with additional military artefacts, including a canteen, a metal bowl, a belt, a notebook, a combat knife, fragments of a military poncho, parts of a pith helmet liner, an aluminium container and medicine bottles.

The remains were transferred to the Ia Phi Commune Military Command for further procedures. Authorities said the search team would continue searching the surrounding area in the coming days to determine whether more war graves remain at the site.
