Under the plan, civil servants and public employees will be off work from Thursday, January 1, to Sunday, January 4, 2026. The working day on Friday, January 2, will be swapped with Saturday, January 10.
The government has encouraged employers to apply the same arrangement for their workers, while ensuring compliance with labour regulations and allowing more favourable schedules where possible.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been tasked with notifying state agencies, political and socio-political organisations, as well as businesses and workers, of the holiday plan.
Agencies and units are required to arrange duty staff in line with regulations and organise work schedules to ensure uninterrupted operations and the continued delivery of public services.
Earlier, the ministry announced that in 2026 public employees would have five days off for the Lunar New Year (Tet), including one day before and four days after the holiday. Combined with weekends, this will result in a nine-day break.
For National Day, civil servants will have two days off on September 1 and 2, 2026, with Monday, August 31 swapped with Saturday, August 22, creating a five-day break including weekends.
With these working-day swaps, public employees will have a total of 25 days off for public holidays and weekends in 2026.
