Two poor children in the northern province of Bac Giang have received over VND650 million (USD25,590) from kind donors after Dantri/DTiNews shared their story.

Representatives from Dantri and authorities in Bac Giang Province visited Nguyen Ngoc Anh, 14, and her brother Nguyen Binh Minh, 7, in Hiep Hoa District's Thuong Thang Commune. They transferred VND383,094,625 which readers sent to the newspaper to support the two children.

Anh recently sent a letter calling for help to Dantri after their mother died.

According to the girl, their mother, Nguyen Thi Lien, 42, was hospitalised last December after severe headaches. She was diagnosed with the final stage of a brain tumour. The tumour was so large that she could not have surgery. A short time later, Lien died.

Anh and her brother knew nothing about their father and were raised by their mother and grandmother.

Nguyen Thi Soan, Anh's grandmother, said that Lien brought the children to live with her and refused to share anything about their father. Lien worked for a garment company for a modest income. She also did odd jobs to earn more money to support her children.

"She started struggling with consecutive headaches from October last year," Soan recalled. "However, she did not go to hospital for a check-up due to a lack of money. By the time she was hospitalised, her condition was critical."

Anh wanted to leave school and go to Hanoi to look for a job, but her grandmother did not agree because she was still too young.

After receiving the money from Dantri, Soan expressed her sincere gratitude to the kind donors for their valuable support of her grandchildren.

"We've also received lots of gifts and over VND270 million, which donors sent to my bank account to help the children," she said. "Thank you so much for your help. I will use part of the money to pay the debts we borrow for their mother's treatment and send the rest to a bank account for them."
