A street in Hanoi severely flooding after heavy rain
Hanoi’s People’s Committee has approved a flood prevention project worth more than VND 383 billion (around USD 15 million) between 2025-2026, targeting several flood-prone neighborhoods in the inner city.
The initiative will focus on districts including Hai Ba Trung, Van Mieu–Quoc Tu Giam, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Hoan Kiem, and Cua Nam. New drainage systems and pump stations will be built in areas lacking prior infrastructure, such as Tong Dan, Dinh Tien Hoang, Phung Hung, Quan Nhan, Cu Loc, and Nguyen Trai.
Existing pumping and transformer stations will be upgraded, and additional pump stations will be installed at Thien Quang, Bay Mau, Ba Mau, Linh Quang, Van Chuong, and Trung Tu lakes.
According to Hanoi Drainage One Member Co., Ltd., rainfall exceeding 50mm led to flooding at 11 locations during the 2024 rainy season. The company said it is implementing preventive measures ahead of this year’s storms.
