Danang fines Chinese tourist VND 25 million for flying drone in no-fly zone

A Chinese tourist has been fined VND 25 million (USD 976) and had their drone confiscated for operating it without a permit in a restricted airspace area in Danang.

Danang police said on November 7 that the city's immigration department had worked with relevant units to detect and handle a foreign national who violated regulations on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

At about 2.27 pm on October 16, authorities spotted the Chinese tourist operating a DJI Mavic 3 drone in the Nai Hung 8 residential area, on Le Van Duyet Street in Son Tra Ward, Danang.

An investigation found that the location was within a designated no-fly zone. The tourist was also unable to produce a flight permit issued by the competent Vietnamese authorities, as required by law.

The immigration department subsequently worked with Son Tra Ward Police and the police unit at Danang International Airport to document the incident and gather evidence of the violation.

Under current regulations, the authorities issued an administrative fine of VND 25 million (USD 976) and imposed an additional penalty of confiscating the drone.

Danang police said strict enforcement against such violations was necessary to safeguard airspace security and safety, particularly in no-fly and restricted-flight zones and around key sites across the city.

The police urged residents and domestic and international visitors planning to use drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles to familiarise themselves with Vietnamese regulations, check no-fly and restricted-flight zones carefully, and obtain the necessary permits before operating their equipment.

Violations will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law, the police said.
