Hanoi to widen seven roads by cutting back pavements and medians

Authorities will cut back pavements and road medians to widen seven streets in Hanoi, including Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, To Huu, Hoang Dao Thuy, Hoang Minh Giam and Khuat Duy Tien.

Hanoi's Department of Construction said on November 7 that it was preparing to carry out urgent infrastructure upgrades and traffic reorganisation at several junctions and along key roads to ease congestion.

The department said the Giang Vo-Lang Ha-Le Van Luong-To Huu corridor was a major radial route that regularly suffered congestion because of heavy traffic volumes, particularly during peak hours. Cutting back pavements to create additional road space for vehicles is intended to help ease bottlenecks along the entire route.

Trees along the affected roads will be relocated and replanted in the newly designated pavement areas, the department said.

Additional shade trees will also be planted to bring the roads into line with the city's broader plan to develop its urban green spaces.

Construction crews will carry out tree relocation, lighting adjustments and pavement removal to widen carriageways in sections of 200-300 metres at a time.

Most of the work will take place at night, from 10.30 pm to 5 am the following morning.
