In an urgent directive issued this week, the Prime Minister urged ministries, local authorities, and relevant agencies to act decisively to contain the spread of the disease.

Since early 2025, more than 514 outbreaks of African swine fever have been reported in 28 out of the country’s 34 provinces and cities. Over 30,000 pigs have been infected, died, or culled, official data shows.

As of now, nearly 250 outbreaks remain active in 20 localities, with new cases reported within the past 21 days.

Authorities warn that the risk of further spread is high, especially in regions with large pig herds, posing a threat to animal health, food security, and the environment.

The Prime Minister instructed localities to mobilise resources to swiftly detect and isolate outbreaks, cull infected pigs, and prevent the illegal transport, slaughter, or dumping of sick animals.

Local leaders will be held accountable for outbreaks stemming from negligence or weak enforcement, the directive said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment have been tasked with closely monitoring the situation and providing early warnings to affected areas.
