The device was discovered on the Ta Trach River by a local resident while fishing after several days of heavy rain exposed it. The site is close to a residential area with 129 households and 545 residents.
The bomb was identified as an MK82-500LB high-explosive aircraft bomb left over from the war. Officials said its nose fuze was damaged and inactive, while the tail fuze had not been fitted, allowing it to be moved safely.
The operation was handled by Norwegian People’s Aid, a Norwegian government-supported humanitarian organisation specialising in unexploded ordnance clearance in Vietnam. Its staff inspected the bomb before transporting it to a disposal site in Phong Dinh Ward for safe destruction.
Separately, authorities reported that a suspected unexploded bomb weighing about 130 kilogrammes was discovered four days earlier in Phuoc Chanh Commune in Danang, on farmland about 500 metres from a local road and around 1 km from the nearest residential area.
Military forces have cordoned off the site and deployed personnel to guard the area while awaiting further instructions.
