Teachers call to improve living condition of mountainous pupils

Teachers at a primary school in the central highlands province of Gia Lai are calling for financial support to help their pupils have proper meals and school equipment.

Teachers at a primary school in the central highlands province of Gia Lai are calling for financial support to help their pupils have proper meals and school equipment.

Nguyen Van Thuan, head of Krong Semi-Boarding Primary and Secondary School, said the semi-boarding model started in 2015. "We are a semi-boarding school but in reality, we function as a boarding school," he said.

Teachers walk to persuade pupils to go to school

The school lacks rooms for pupils so the meeting room and classrooms were used while another building was built to accommodate 149 out of 273 pupils that stay at the school. In winter, they severely lack warm clothes and blankets.

Thuan said, "It's a hard work to persuade the pupils to go to school and it's even harder to give them full meals. Each pupil's meal costs only VND3,000 (13 US cents) to VND5,000. The teachers tried to help but it's not enough."

Forty percent of the pupils live in Pngah Village deep in Kon Ka Kinh National Park. The teachers have to walk for a whole day along the cliff or bumpy paths in order to reach the village and persuade the pupils to go to school. Each settlement of Pngah Village is 15km away from each other and the teachers have to visit every absent pupil.

Chi, a teacher at the school said, "I've spent 17 years going to villages to persuade children to go to school so I know which parts of the route are dangerous. But it's tough when it rains. If the pupils go home, they may not return to the school again."
