The provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 3374 recognising the national park, located in Giao Minh Commune, as a tourist destination.
Under the decision, the park is responsible for managing and developing tourism activities in accordance with existing regulations.
The recognition will help standardise visitor services, develop ecotourism, birdwatching and environmental education, and promote the park to domestic and international visitors.
Xuan Thuy National Park covers 15,100 hectares, including a 7,100-hectare core zone and an approximately 8,000-hectare buffer zone. It was designated a national park by the Prime Minister in 2003.
In 1989, the wetland area that now forms part of the park became the first Ramsar site in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, marking Vietnam’s accession as the 50th member of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands of international importance.
The park contains a diverse range of wetland habitats, including mangrove tidal flats, mudflats, shrimp ponds, sandbanks, tidal creeks and estuarine waters.
It is home to more than 200 species of vascular plants, 110 species of zooplankton, 385 species of invertebrates, 155 fish species and 427 insect species.
Xuan Thuy is particularly important as a stopover and wintering site for migratory waterbirds, earning it the nicknames 'international bird station' and 'bird paradise'.
Surveys have recorded 222 bird species, including 166 migratory species, with rare and threatened waterbirds such as the spoon-billed sandpiper, Nordmann’s greenshank, black-faced spoonbill, spot-billed pelican and Chinese egret.
The park is also home to Vietnam’s largest recorded population of black-faced spoonbills.
In December 2004, UNESCO recognised Xuan Thuy National Park as a core zone of the Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve.
In March 2026, the park was recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Park.
