HCM City seeks to ease peak-season tourism pressure on Con Dao

HCM City is exploring ways to spread tourist arrivals to Con Dao Island more evenly throughout the year, easing peak-season pressure on infrastructure while protecting its natural environment.

The HCM City Department of Tourism and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) signed a 2026-2030 cooperation agreement on October 21 to align Con Dao's tourism growth with airport capacity and visitor infrastructure.

Under the agreement, the two sides will exchange information on airport operations and planned upgrades at Con Dao Airport, while exploring ways to distribute visitor arrivals across seasons and improve air and sea transport connections.

The initiative aims to ease overcrowding during peak periods and balance tourism growth with the island's infrastructure and environmental capacity.

Tourism development will also prioritise the preservation of Con Dao's historical and cultural heritage and marine ecosystems.

Beyond Con Dao, the agreement covers promoting air routes to HCM City and neighbouring destinations, airport-based tourism marketing, aviation-linked tourism products and market data sharing.

HCM City welcomed an estimated 8.52 million international visitors and 39.57 million domestic visitors in the first nine months of 2026. Tourism revenue reached VND 282.7 trillion (USD 10.7 billion), up 43.4 per cent year on year.

Pham Huy Binh, director of the municipal Department of Tourism, said closer cooperation between aviation and tourism would help promote destinations, expand visitor markets and improve travel experiences.

ACV chairman Nguyen Cao Cuong said the corporation aimed to strengthen air connectivity, tourism promotion and passenger services.
