Danang tourism worker travels 1,000km to return lost wedding ring

A tourism worker from Danang travelled more than 1,000km to Phu Quoc to return a wedding ring lost at sea by a Portuguese couple, helping them recover a treasured keepsake before flying home.

On October 22, the management board of the Son Tra Peninsula and Danang's Tourist Beaches said staff member Phan Thanh Trinh had helped locate and return the ring after it was lost while the couple were swimming at My Khe Beach in An Hai Ward.

Trinh said the couple lost their wedding rings around noon on October 19. Unable to find the item themselves, they returned to their hotel for help and were advised to contact him.

After identifying the likely location of the lost ring, Trinh went into the sea with a metal detector. However, strong waves and shifting sand made the search difficult. After two days of persistent efforts, he found the gold ring on the afternoon of October 21.

Trinh immediately called the couple to inform them. By then, however, they had travelled to Phu Quoc on October 20 and were preparing to return to Portugal. Travelling back to Danang to collect the ring would have disrupted their itinerary and incurred additional costs.

Because the ring held special sentimental value, the couple asked Trinh if he could deliver it to them in Phu Quoc before their departure. They offered to cover his airfare.

After reporting the request to his superiors and receiving approval, Trinh set off for the island.

On the morning of October 22, Trinh arrived at Phu Quoc Airport, where the couple were waiting for him. They were delighted to receive their wedding ring and repeatedly thanked the Danang tourism worker for his dedication.

Trinh said he charged nothing for his assistance, explaining that he simply wanted to help the couple recover an item of great personal significance. He hoped his gesture would help spread the image of Danang as a friendly and welcoming destination.
