Dao's family receives the donation

Phan Thi Dao and her husband have four children together. The youngest is four years old and the oldest is 17. Even though both of them had weak health, they earned money by working as bricklayers and farm labourers.

Two years ago, Dao fainted because of heart disease and went under an emergency operation. However, Dao developed encephalitis since the family has no money for proper check-ups after the operation. A few months ago, Dao's husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. They had borrowed hundreds of millions of VND for his treatment but he eventually died.

Dao's oldest daughter, Pham Thi Hong, had to find work to take care of her siblings and buy medicines for her mother. Hong said she planned to drop out of school and go to southern provinces to find works.

Representatives of Dantri visited and gave the family of Phan Thi Dao VND113,265,000 (USD5,000) donation from readers on September 3. Local Party Secretary Le Dinh Son, Vice Chairman of Ha Tinh People's Committee Dang Quoc Vinh and head of the Department of Education and Training Tran Trung Dung also visited the family.

Party Secretary Le Dinh Son expressed gratitude on behalf of the family. "This is such a nice gesture to the poor and unfortunate people," he said. Son also asked the head of the Department of Education and Training Tran Trung Dung to give support so that Dao's children wouldn't have to drop out of school.

"We feel all warm inside after receiving love and support from everyone in the past days. Thanks to readers nationwide and provincial leaders that we have more courage to keep going to school and taking care of our mother," Hong said.
