A poor couple in HCM City is calling financial supports to help cover hospital fees for his four-year-old daughter who is suffering from cancer.

Nguyen Nhu Ngoc is the eldest child of the couple Nguyen Van Loc, 35, and Tong Nhu Phuong, 33, in HCM City’s District 9.

Loc said that he was born in a poor family. So, he and his brothers and sisters did not have a chance to study colleges or universities. His 10-member family lived in a 20 square-metre house.

Loc left school quite early to work to support his family. After getting married, Loc worked as a builder, while his wife worked for a garment company with a modest income.

Last year, a small tumour was suddenly found on the left cheek of their daughter who was three years old at that time. Doctors initially failed to diagnose her disease. Until the tumour became bigger, causing her to have high fevers and vomit, she was diagnosed with sarcoma.

On the day when the couple was informed of their daughter’s disease was also the time the wife knew that she was pregnant for the second child.

To have money for the treatment, Loc tried to work as a motorbike driver in the evening after finishing the work of a builder during the daytime.

Then one day, he faced a workplace accident, resulting in injuries to his arms. Since then, he has been unable to do heavy work.

According to doctors, it would cost VND270 million (USD12,270) for Ngoc’s treatment, excluding the fees offered by health insurance.

Ngoc is skinny and much smaller than her age.

The couple have borrowed money from different sources to cover the hospital fees and returned to their home town. Now they are temporarily living in a 4-square metre corner in the sitting room of Loc’s parents.

Doctors said that without the timely treatment, the little girl may be blind and deaf because of complications caused by the disease.
