The surge in border trade between Vietnam and China is common when the Lunar New Year approaches.

The serious congestion at Kim Thanh II International Border Gate
Vietnam mostly exports dragon fruits to China through Kim Thanh II International Border Gate while mainly importing other fruits and vegetables.
The deterioration of Bridge T1 on a road leading to the border gate has also been partially blamed for the problem.
To improve the situation, Lao Cai Province’s Economic Zone Economic Board worked with the Chinese to extend operation time of the border gate from January 26.
The border gate now opens until 10 pm, instead of 7 pm as usual, which is expected to help to ease the jam in several days to come.
Meanwhile, Lao Cai has also planned to repair Bridge T1 with the total investment of VND1 billion (USD43,478).
