HCM City to send rotating doctors to Con Dao from September

Ho Chi Minh City will deploy rotating doctors to Con Dao Island starting in September, with priority given to obstetrics, emergency services, and paediatrics.

According to the city’s Health Department, Con Dao is home to over 10,000 permanent residents and receives tens of thousands of visitors, officials, and military personnel each year. While the island has a well-equipped medical centre, it continues to face a shortage of specialised healthcare professionals.

In the first phase, expected to begin in the third quarter, doctors specialising in obstetrics, surgery, internal medicine, and paediatrics will be sent to the island. The programme also includes remote consultations, online training, a full obstetric care team, enhanced emergency and elderly care, and the establishment of a local blood bank.

The second phase will focus on long-term healthcare development, including a general hospital, stronger links with major hospitals in HCM City, and a residency rotation scheme. Incentives will be introduced to attract and retain medical staff.

The first medical rotation is scheduled for National Day on 2 September, marking the official launch of the city's specialist support programme for the island.

The initiative is among the first to reflect HCM City’s healthcare strategy following its recent administrative merger and territorial expansion.
