HCM City will extend social distancing after August 15 as the city’s Covid-19 pandemic has remained complicated, said a municipal official.

According to Phan Van Mai, vice party secretary of HCM City, the government has set a target for HCM City to contain its Covid-19 outbreak by September 15.

HCM City has made great efforts in the Covid-19 fight, but the city has continued facing a high number of new infections per day. From now to September 15, the city needs to tighten control over Covid-19 prevention and control activities in ‘red zones’ to try to expand more ‘green zones’ in the next 30 days.

The city will also focus on providing treatment for Covid-19 patients, including those quarantined at home. Localities need to list Covid-19 patients who are taking home-treatment so that medical staff can help to give advice to them every day. The patients will be provided with medicines. In cases where they face worsened conditions, they will be supported by quick Covid-19 response teams.

The city will raise Covid-19 treatment capacity at medical facilities, including the oxygen use inspection for the appropriate supply and distribution.

The city will also offer two more financial aid packages to help people who are hard hit by the pandemic.

According to Mai, the number of travellers in HCM City has been increasing, especially during rush hours. The Covid-19 outbreak hasn't been controlled yet but many people are out on the streets.

Over the past seven days, HCM City has reported around 3,678 Covid-19 patients on average every day; most of them in quarantined and sealed-off areas. The figure would still be around 3,000 cases after August 15.

Deputy Party Secretary of HCM City Phan Van Mai called for the residents to stay home. "The fight against Covid-19 is long, and the city is working to control the outbreak by September 15," he said. "If we can't do this together then it will get longer and harder to control".
