According to a statement from the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, Lee and his spouse will undertake the visit at the invitation of To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of Vietnam.

Lee will be the first foreign head of state to visit Vietnam since the 16th National Assembly consolidated the state apparatus, during which To Lam was elected president.

The trip also marks Lee’s first official visit to Vietnam since assuming office as South Korea’s head of state.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, all South Korean presidents have visited Vietnam at least once during their tenure.

In the opposite direction, the General Secretary of the Communist party of Vietnam has visited South Korea in April 1995, November 2007, October 2014 and August 2025.

Vietnam’s presidents have travelled to South Korea in August 2001, November 2011, December 2022 and November 2025, while Vietnamese prime ministers have made eight visits.

South Korea is currently Vietnam’s largest foreign investor, its third largest trading partner and the second biggest provider of official development assistance.

In 2025, bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 89.5 billion, up 9.6 per cent year on year.
