Hanoi to install 2,460 more AI traffic cameras in 2026

Hanoi plans to install an additional 2,460 AI-powered traffic cameras in 2026 at major intersections, bridges, hospitals and bus terminals, as part of efforts to modernise traffic management.

As many as 1,837 AI cameras have been installed at more than 188 intersections in Hanoi

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Quang Minh, deputy head of the traffic command and signal control unit under the Hanoi traffic police department, said the move supports the city’s push to accelerate digital transformation.

Police have recently brought phase two of the Hanoi traffic control centre into operation, integrating 1,837 AI cameras and an intelligent signal system covering more than 188 intersections, Minh said.

During the 2026-2030 period, Hanoi police will continue investing in digital traffic infrastructure to better serve road users and reduce congestion and accidents, he added.

Minh cited the system’s effectiveness, noting that six “green wave” corridors have been established on Hue, Hang Bai, Tran Hung Dao, Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc and Quan Su streets, cutting travel time by 31 per cent and easing queues and delays at traffic lights.

He said violations caused by technical faults or emergency situations would not be penalised, with all cases reviewed by officers before any fine is issued.

Under the current process, AI cameras flag suspected violations, which are then examined by a specialised unit at the control centre. If sufficient legal grounds are confirmed, traffic police notify the violator and invite them to complete procedures.

To reduce administrative burdens, Minh said police have proposed piloting a fully electronic violation-handling process. If approved, offenders would be able to complete procedures and pay fines online without visiting police offices, saving time and travel costs.
