The Vietnamese government has approved the urgent construction of an extension to the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line, linking Ho Chi Minh City with Dong Nai Province's administrative centre and Long Thanh International Airport.

The decision was outlined in Resolution No. 255, issued on August 27, which classifies the project as an urgent construction work under the provisions of the 2025 Construction Law.
Under the resolution, the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee has been tasked with implementing the project in accordance with regulations governing construction and public-private partnership (PPP) investment.
The government stressed that compensation and land clearance must be handled carefully to balance the interests of residents, businesses and other stakeholders. Authorities were instructed to prevent violations, administrative shortcomings, legal disputes and potential public security issues arising from the land acquisition process.
The resolution also requires a transparent and objective investor selection process. Any investor chosen for the project must demonstrate sufficient financial and technical capacity and meet requirements relating to construction progress, quality standards and operational efficiency.
The proposed extension of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line will run approximately 44.5 kilometres and is designed for a maximum operating speed of 120 kilometres per hour.
The project will be developed in two sections. The first section will extend about 7.1 kilometres from Suoi Tien Station to the administrative centre of Dong Nai City. The second section will continue for approximately 36.4 kilometres from the city centre to Long Thanh International Airport. The project also includes the construction of stations, a depot and associated infrastructure along the route.
Officials said the metro extension would provide an additional transport link between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province, complementing existing transport networks and supporting the development of integrated urban rail systems. The project is also expected to improve access to Long Thanh International Airport, one of Vietnam's most important future aviation hubs.
The extension forms part of broader efforts to expand urban rail connectivity in southern Vietnam and aligns with international trends favouring mass-transit systems as a solution to growing transport demand and urbanisation.
