In June, Hanoi’s CPI rose by 1.21% and Ho Chi Minh City by 0.69% against May respectively, the lowest rise since last November.
Hanoi’s June CPI has surged 20.24% from year-on-year and 12.94% from the end of 2010 while Ho Chi Minh City witnessed respective rises of 16.54% and 11.54%.
In June, Hanoi saw price rises among 10 groups of commodities with three registering increases of over 1%.
Among those, restaurant and catering services recorded the highest rise of 2.08% against May. This is attributed to the lower supplies due to animal diseases and higher transport and animal feed costs.
According to Vnexpress, in Ho Chi Minh City, nine out of 11 groups of goods and services saw CPI increases of below 1% compared to May, except for the culture and entertainment category which rose 1.56%.
Nguyen Minh Phong, Director of the Hanoi Socio-Economic Research Institute, was cited by the Saigon Times as saying that, said the rising food prices would have strong impact on June’s CPI. Phong predicted Vietnam’s June CPI would be higher than 2% against May, or even hit 2.5%, raising the country’s CPI rate to 17%-18% this year.
