Many people admitted to the hospital

A 36-year-old patient in Dak Lak said she had only been released a few days ago. She had the symptoms since early August but didn't think that it would be serious. "Doctors said if I had been admitted a bit later, I would have died," she said.

Dozens of households in Khanh Xuan Wards have ill members. Statistics from the Dak Lak Preventive Medicine Centre show that as of August 6, there were 9,391 cases, of which 3,643 cases were in Buon Ma Thuot City, 1,045 cases were in Krong Nang District, 1,095 cases in Buon Don District.

Central Highland General Hospital reported that their Department of Infectious Diseases was filled with patients during the weekends. They lack beds and space while the number of patients is still rising. As a result, they have to put up beds in other departments and along the hallways. Doctors and nurses from other departments were also asked to help with the tests, blood collecting and treatment.

"The number of admitted patients sharply increased this year. We have to work extra shifts," said Nguyen Dai Phong, the hospital's director.

According to Dak Nong Department of Health, in the first six months, a total 2,681 dengue fever cases were reported in 68 out of 71 communes and wards. Dak G'long District has the highest number of patients with 949 people were admitted.

Pham Van Lao, director of Dak Lak Preventive Medicine Centre said, "The immediate solution is to get rid of stagnant water to kill the mosquito larva across the province. Our employees will go to the site to deal with the outbreak and train local people."

Aedes aegypti, Culex and Anopheles are three types of mosquitoes in Vietnam that can spread dengue fever. Aedes aegypti is the most dangerous because they can give birth to 500 eggs despite having a 20-day life-cycle.

"Aedes aegypti like clean water and indoor environments. They can often be found on smelly clothes and will attack people immediately," Lao said.
