2.2 tonnes of elephant tusks illegally transported into Vietnam
The tusks were found during the check of imported timber cargo containers at Tien Sa Port. The containers were brought into Vietnam by Van An Ltd. Co, with the ivory found in 63 bags among the containers.
This is the biggest-ever tusk smuggling case in Vietnam yet and police will conduct a complete investigation in the coming days.
Earlier on August 13, authorities in Danang City also seized a Van An Company shipment from Africa, which was found to contain a tonne of ivory and rhino horn.
International trade in elephant tusks and rhino horn is illegal in Vietnam. Elephants and rhinos are endangered species and listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
