Over 26 million contributed opinions to the draft constitution in the first three months of 2013

In the draft amendment, the article on naming the country attracted a lot of attention.

The first option supports the continued use of the name of Socialist Republic of Vietnam which is has been the official name of the country following reunification since 1976. This name is also familiar with Vietnamese citizens and foreigners while it shows the country's goal is to become a true socialist society.

However, there are opinions that Vietnam should change the name back to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This name was used in the northern region from 1954 until 1976, and was proclaimed by late President Ho Chi Minh in the proclamation of independence.

This name is considered to be most fitting with the current development of Vietnam.

"Changing back the name will have benefits. Vietnamese citizens will have more understanding about the country's state which is just in transition period toward socialism." former Chief of National Assembly Office Vu Mao said.

According to the committee, the name of Democratic Republic of Vietnam is more dynamic and appealing to the people and neighbouring countries.

The ultimate goal of moving towards a socialist society will not be changed because the constitution would continue to uphold this goal.

Article 4 stated that the Communist Party of Vietnam is the force assuming leadership of the State and society. It also means that the military is under the party's command.
