Massive landslide blocks road to four villages in Nghe An

A large landslide has buried sections of a road serving four villages in Nghe An Province, disrupting travel and complicating repair work.

According to Pham Van Hoa, chairman of Muong Long Commune, large volumes of soil and rocks continued to slide down the mountainside in Trung Tam Village, leaving the area at risk of further landslides.

The road from the Muong Long Heaven Gate area in Trung Tam to Sa Lay, Tham Hang and Tham Hoc villages and surrounding areas had previously been damaged by landslides.

The provincial Department of Construction began repair work following the damage, while local authorities opened a temporary road along a stream to maintain access for residents.

However, on August 31, hundreds of cubic metres of soil and rocks suddenly slid from the mountainside onto the construction area before spilling down and burying the temporary road.

Further landslides occurred on September 1, with increasing volumes of debris covering several sections of the route, hampering repair work and making travel difficult for local residents.

The scale of the landslide meant a longer-term solution would require appropriate technical measures and resources. The commune has asked provincial authorities and relevant agencies to consider measures to secure the route.

In the meantime, authorities have opened a temporary service road through the affected area and deployed personnel to guide residents and vehicles.

Residents have been advised to stay away from areas at risk of further landslides, particularly during rain or when signs of instability appear on the mountainside.
