According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the region is entering its rainy season, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected from Thanh Hoa to Hue and parts of the south-central coast on September 8-9, with locally heavy rain.
From September 10-15, widespread heavy rain is expected from Thanh Hoa to Hue and along the coast from Danang to the former Binh Dinh Province.
Prolonged heavy rain could cause localised flooding in low-lying areas, as well as flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
Before the main spell, southern Quang Tri, Hue, Danang, eastern Quang Ngai and the former Binh Dinh Province are forecast to receive 15-30mm of rain from the evening of September 5 through September 7, with some areas seeing more than 70mm.
Thunderstorms could also bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts.
The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam are also forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain, from September 5-9.
A widespread spell of heavy rain is expected in these regions from Sept. 10-12, bringing risks of localised flooding, while flash floods and landslides are possible in the Central Highlands.
Meanwhile, northern Vietnam is expected to see relatively little rain in the first half of September after an unusually wet August.
Prolonged heavy rain is unlikely from September 6-8, although scattered rain may occur on September 9-10. Mostly dry conditions with light sunshine are forecast from September 10-14.
