Going to an ATM this time of year, you might see ‘systematic errors’ messages, meaning that the machine is simply out of money.

Broke ATMs

Cash supplies at ATMs this during the New Year has been a long-running problem for users. Manh Cuong, resident of Hanoi, commented, “My company directly deposits my pay into the Vietnam Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank), but I’ve had difficulties accessing my funds.”

“I’ve had to go to several different ATMs around Giang Vo, all of them claiming ‘systematic errors’. I was happy to find one machine with a little cash left on Lang Ha road,” Cuong notes.

Recently some Dantri/DTiNews readers have complained that they could not withdraw money from ATMs operated by Technical and Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Techcombank).

“When we deposit money in a bank it is our right to take it out at an ATM. The situation shows a lack of respect for customers,” one reader said.

This is not an isolated incident. It has happened at Vietinbank and Techcombank ATMs all over Hanoi.

Meanwhile Vietcombank has succeeded in providing continual service, leading some customers to wonder if this institution has put a block on its inter-bank withdrawal services.

Many people worry that they will not be able to withdraw money from ATMs for the Tet holiday.

Deputy General Director of Vietinbank blamed the problem on scarcity of cash and soaring demands at ATMs.

“We’ve assigned an official to continuously on-call to supervise the operations of our ATMs, in order to make sure that our customers can withdraw their money,” said Tuan.

To Thuy Trang, Marketing Manager of Techcombank, says that there are also valid network problems, adding, “Techcombank will heighten supervision over ATMs to ensure smooth operations during the Tet holiday.”

Many banks advise their customers to try different locations, that are linked directly with their banks, in order to ensure successful transactions.
