HCM City surveys 12 key sites in search for fallen soldiers' remains

These sites have been identified based on eyewitness accounts, historical records, and other archival sources indicating the possible presence of mass burial sites.

According to the plan, 12 priority locations will be surveyed, including areas believed to contain large collective graves or where evidence has been documented through witnesses, historical files, and official records.

One of the key sites is the area around Tan Son Nhat Airport, now located in Tan Binh Ward, where a major battle took place on the night of January 30-31, 1968. Authorities discovered two mass burial trenches at the site in 1995 and recovered the remains of 181 fallen soldiers.

In Lai Thieu Ward, historical documents indicate that several soldiers were buried following a battle that occurred in February 1968.

In Ngai Giao Commune, records show that 107 soldiers were killed during a battle on June 8, 1969. So far, the remains of 60 soldiers have been recovered, while efforts continue to verify information and locate the remaining burial sites.

In Binh Co Ward, witnesses reported that approximately 200 soldiers from the 7th Division were buried in three mass graves after a battle on May 12, 1968. Local residents have already discovered the remains of seven soldiers and have preserved photographs showing the locations of the burial trenches.

Another priority area is Hoa Hiep Commune, where historical records indicate that approximately 700 soldiers were buried. The site has been identified as one of the most significant locations for the upcoming search campaign.

In Xuyen Moc Commune, documents record that 21 soldiers from the 445th Battalion were killed during a battle on December 31, 1970. Photographs of two burial trenches and a list of the 21 soldiers have been preserved, providing valuable evidence for ongoing verification and recovery efforts.

At Hang Keo Cemetery in the Con Dao Special Zone, many soldiers who died from 1945 onward, particularly during the 1940-1941 "White Terror" period, were buried. The cemetery has also been designated as one of the priority sites for surveying, verification, and recovery operations.

Authorities have been instructed to complete all preparatory work by July 22. From July 23 through the end of 2026, search teams will carry out surveys, verification, and excavation activities in accordance with the approved plan.
