Between 6 pm on July 22 and 6 am on July 23, many areas recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall, with soil moisture exceeding 85 per cent or reaching saturation in some locations, according to the provincial hydrometeorological centre.
As of 7 am on July 23, the national flash flood and landslide warning system placed Na Sang and Muong Pon at a very high risk level, while Tua Thang and Sin Chai were at high risk.
Forecasters said scattered showers and thunderstorms would continue over the next six hours, with rainfall of 10-30 mm expected across most areas and more than 50 mm in some places.
The storms could bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong winds, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides and localised flooding, particularly in mountainous areas and low-lying urban areas.
Dien Bien has been hit by 23 weather-related disasters since the start of 2026, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, lightning, landslides and ground subsidence, according to the provincial People's Committee.
The disasters have affected 43 of the province's 45 communes and wards, killing one person, injuring six and damaging more than 800 homes, nearly 985 hectares of crops and other infrastructure, with losses estimated at VND 53.4 billion (USD 2 million).
