The Lao Cai Provincial Military Command safely transported and destroyed a 340kg M117 bomb left over from the Vietnam War after it was discovered at a road construction site.
The bomb was recently found by local residents during construction work in Hong Bun Hamlet, Bao Ha Commune.
Military specialists identified the device as an M117 general-purpose bomb dating from the war. It weighed about 340kg and contained approximately 175kg of high explosives. The bomb measured around 40cm in diameter and 1.2m in length.
Officials said the munition had a high destructive capacity and posed a significant safety risk if left untreated.
To protect nearby residents, authorities immediately established a safety perimeter around the site, stationed guards around the clock and warned the public not to approach the area.
After preparing a technical disposal plan and completing all required safety measures, the Lao Cai Provincial Military Command transported the bomb to a designated demolition site in Xuan Quang Commune on the morning of July 22.
At 11.20 am, the bomb was successfully destroyed by remote detonation. Authorities said the operation was completed safely without affecting nearby residents or surrounding areas.
