When Pham Minh Anh was six months old, her mother, Truong Thi Thuy Trang, was diagnosed with throat cancer. When they went to the hospital, the tumour already spread to the liver. Anh's father, Pham Thanh Phong, borrowed money everywhere but couldn't save her. Anh's mother died in late 2015.

Unfortunately, Anh was also diagnosed with cancer one year later. "I was working at the Cambodia-Vietnam border when I was told that Anh was sick. I was shocked when doctors said she had leukaemia," he said.

Phong said he didn't go to school and found every work he could to pay debts and support the family. Without money, Anh's father asked to bring her home and treat her with herbal medicines.

"The doctors told me to let Anh stay at the hospital or else she'll die. They also told me how to ask for discounts and raise fund to treat her in the past year. We live on charity meals. We are exhausted and the treatment is long-term and costly," Phong said.

His oldest daughter is in eighth grade and told him that she wanted to drop out of school.
