New severe cold spell hits northern region

The northern region of Vietnam has continued to face a new intense cold spell while some northern mountainous areas have seen snow as temperatures falling to minus 2-4 degrees Celsius.

Snow falls on the Fansipan Mountain in Lao Cai Province on January 26, 2025.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the strong cold front has significantly impacted northern and central northern provinces as well as parts of the central region on January 26.

Snow has appeared in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang's Meo Vac District for the first time since December 2022, as temperatures dipped to 2–4 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The neighbouring province of Lao Cai's Fansipan Mountain also saw snow as temperatures dropped to below 2 degrees Celsius.

The cold front is spreading to the central and parts of the south-central regions, the centre said. Meanwhile, the northern and north-central regions will continue to endure severe cold, with temperatures in the lowland areas falling to 6-12 degrees Celsius, and frost likely to form in mountainous areas.

The intensified cold front is bringing scattered rain and showers to the north-central region from January 26 to 28, while the central region may see heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
