Erosion has affected the Huong, Bo, O Lau, Truoi, Nong, Cau Hai and Bu Lu rivers, among others, and typically worsens during the rainy season from September to December as swollen rivers carry away soil along their banks.
Heavy rain from September 10 to 13 swelled the O Lau River in Phong Dien Ward, causing three new erosion sites that cut up to five metres into riverbanks towards homes and local roads.
Local authorities have installed warning signs and barriers and restricted access to areas at risk of further erosion.
Along the Truoi River in Loc An Commune, erosion stretches for about 1.95 km, threatening homes, farmland and riverside infrastructure. Hue plans to spend VND 50 billion on reinforced embankments there between 2026 and 2030.
About 2.5 km of the Bu Lu River in Chan May-Lang Co Commune has also suffered severe erosion for years, with an estimated VND 35 billion needed for protective embankments.
Historic floods in late 2025 alone eroded more than 10 km of riverbanks along the Huong, Bo, O Lau and other rivers.
Hue has built about 99.6 km of anti-erosion embankments in recent years and is constructing another 14.4 km along the Huong, Bo and O Lau rivers to protect residents, property and essential infrastructure.
The city's Department of Agriculture and Environment said authorities would continue monitoring erosion-prone areas and seek central government funding for further riverbank protection projects.
