Power outage disrupts 14 Ho Chi Minh City metro services

A widespread power outage in Thu Duc on October 17 disrupted 14 services on Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line, with operations fully restored after nearly an hour.

Nguyen Thuan, a passenger who boarded at Suoi Tien Bus Station at around 7 am, said the power went out moments after her train began moving. Staff had to open the train doors manually.

Fortunately, the train had not yet fully left the platform. Passengers were directed to move to the last carriage to disembark.

Thuan was travelling from Suoi Tien Bus Station to Tan Cang station. As she was not in a hurry, she waited at the station for nearly an hour until power was restored.

She said she saw many commuters heading to school and work having to use ride-hailing motorbike services or find alternative transport.

HURC1, the operator of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line, said the Thu Duc 220kV substation lost power at 7.04 am on October 17 because of a fault in the national electricity transmission system.

The outage affected power supplies across Thu Duc and disrupted metro services, with 14 train journeys affected, according to HURC1.

After electricity was restored, HURC1 worked with the Southern Power System Dispatch Centre to reconnect the load and resume operations. Full service was restored at 7.57 am.
