Nguyen Thi Tuyen in Hanoi’s Hoai Duc outlying district has spent four decades making traditional lanterns for every Mid-Autumn festival.

Hau Ai Village in Van Canh Ward was the biggest Mid-Autumn lantern hub in Hanoi in the past. Its products were provided to neighbouring localities. Tuyen’s family is now the only household maintaining the work in the locality.

Tuyen is the third generation of her family making the lanterns for children and she has continued passing down the passion to her daughter. Making a star-shaped traditional lantern involves different steps, from selecting cutting and assembling materials.

With this kind of traditional toy, besides skilful hands, it is important to have meticulousness and patience in every tiny detail.

Most of Tuyen’s Mid-Autumn toys are made to serve schools and agencies to use as gifts for children.

Nursery teacher Ho Phuong Nga visited Tuyen’s house to learn about making lanterns and how to choose the most beautiful products for her classroom.
