The ministry has set a target of breaking ground on the North-South High-Speed Railway in December 2027.

The planned railway will stretch approximately 1,541km, running from Ngoc Hoi Station in Hanoi to Thu Thiem Station in Ho Chi Minh City and passing through 15 provinces and centrally governed cities.

The project involves building an entirely new double-track railway using the standard 1,435mm gauge, with a design speed of 350km per hour. Preliminary investment is estimated at USD 67.34 billion.

The Thang Long Project Management Board has been assigned as the project owner responsible for preparing the feasibility study for the North-South High-Speed Railway.

To meet the land clearance and construction schedule, authorities plan to select consultants to prepare the feasibility study and overall technical design in June 2026. An interim feasibility study report prepared by the consultants is expected to be completed by June 2027.

The ministry is working towards completing preparations in time for construction to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.
