More than VND 500 million raised to help hearing-impaired boy

A five-year-old boy in Dak Lak Province has received more than VND 500 million (USD 20,000) in donations, giving him a chance to undergo cochlear implant surgery and regain his hearing.

On May 29, representatives of Dantri newspaper and local authorities presented a symbolic donation of VND 377.9 million raised through the newspaper's Charity Fund to the family of Nguyen Xuan Quang in Duc Binh Commune.

The funds were transferred directly to Quang's bank account. In addition, the father and son received a further VND 150 million inu direct support from donors, bringing total contributions to nearly VND 530 million.

Quang was featured in a previous article about his struggle to raise his son, Hai Dang, after the child's mother left the family following his diagnosis.

Born with severe hearing loss in both ears, Hai Dang did not receive specialist treatment until age two because of financial hardship, by which time doctors said his speech development had been affected.

Living in a dilapidated house, Quang, who has lost sight in one eye, supports the family through manual labour and fishing despite his own health difficulties.

Doctors recommended a cochlear implant costing around VND350 million, a sum far beyond the family's means. Without timely treatment, Hai Dang risked missing the critical period for hearing and language development.

Moved by the family's circumstances, Dantri readers contributed funds to help cover the cost of surgery and related expenses.

Speaking after receiving the donations, Quang said the support had given his son a chance to hear, speak and attend school like other children.

“I never imagined receiving such a large amount of support. We have already taken Dang to Ho Chi Minh City for examinations and are now waiting for the surgery schedule,” he said.

Local authorities described the family as one of the most disadvantaged households in the area and said the donations had brought renewed hope for the boy's future.

Officials pledged to continue supporting the family to ensure Hai Dang receives treatment and has access to education and development opportunities.
