The provincial People’s Committee of Quang Tri has approved a new project to support victims of explosive remnants of war (ERW) and persons with disabilities (PwDs), and to promote mine risk education across the province. The project is funded with EUR 293,800 (approximately USD 342,390) by the Embassy of Ireland in Vietnam and will run until July 31, 2026.

The project will be managed by the RENEW Centre for rehabilitation and assistance for PwDs, extending to all communes and wards, including border areas, in Quang Tri, a province heavily contaminated with landmines and ERWs.

It aims to provide aid to mine and ERW victims and PwDs through distribution of assistive and orthopaedic devices, promote social inclusion, support livelihoods, and enhance nationwide mine-risk awareness. It will also help strengthen survey, clearance, and communications activities to reduce and eliminate explosive hazards.

Planned deliverables include 100 wheelchairs, 30 handcycles and 70 other orthopaedic devices; support for five PwD-run production facilities; rehabilitation for 35 children with disabilities at three centres; legal-awareness initiatives for about 1,200 PwDs; accessibility improvements for 42 persons with severe disabilities; kitchen equipment for 150 poor PwD households; and capital support for 30 households.

In addition, the mine-risk education programme will organise 85 field trips for 2,720 children and youth, 55 extracurricular school activities reaching 12,650 beneficiaries, and 70 community communications events, including football matches, for 6,500 children and youth. The “Safe Steps” campaign will be promoted through community outreach and digital communications, including virtual reality exhibits at the Quang Tri mine action exhibition centre. 35 core collaborators, including teachers, Youth Union officials and local authorities, will be trained to lead these efforts.

The provincial People’s Committee has asked the RENEW Centre to coordinate with the Irish Embassy, the Department of Public Security and local authorities to ensure proper implementation and regulatory compliance.
