Whirlwind sweeps through Bao Loc, causing losses of hundreds of millions

A squall with whirlwinds swept through Bao Loc, ripping roofs off homes and toppling trees and power poles. Initial losses ran to hundreds of millions of dong.

Authorities in Lam Dong Province on Friday released initial estimates of damage caused by thunderstorms and strong winds on the afternoon of August 20. Local authorities have also deployed officials and soldiers to help residents deal with the aftermath of the storm.

Earlier, on the afternoon of August 20, a thunderstorm accompanied by a whirlwind swept through some wards in the Bao Loc urban area, damaging many homes and toppling trees and electricity poles.

Bao Loc Ward 3 recorded seven houses with roofs torn off, along with three trees and five electricity poles brought down, with losses of more than VND 300 million (USD 11,700).

Meanwhile, Bao Loc Ward 2 reported eight houses with roofs torn off, while a school wall and the corrugated iron roof of a workshop were damaged by falling trees. Total losses were estimated at VND 200 million (USD 7,800).

B'Lao Ward also recorded numerous fallen trees that snapped power lines and broke electricity poles.

Elsewhere, thunderstorms and strong winds swept through Da Huoai Commune, Lam Dong Province, tearing roofs off eight houses and damaging the power transmission line along Chuoi Pass on National Highway 20. The commune also recorded flooding across 0.7 hectares of durian orchards, while more than 200 durian trees in commercial production were snapped or uprooted, causing heavy economic losses.

Durian growers in Da Huoai 2 Commune, Da Teh Commune and Bao Lam Commune in Lam Dong Province were also affected by the thunderstorms and strong winds on the afternoon of August 20.
