Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong holds talks with Lao General Secretary, President Bounnhang Vorachith, Ha Noi, December 19, 2017
The Vietnamese Party chief hailed the visit to be organized on the occasion of the Viet Nam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship Year 2017, the 55th anniversary of Viet Nam-Laos diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Viet Nam-Laos Treaty on Amity and Cooperation.
The two sides informed each other of the respective situations, exchanged measures to develop the relations between the two Parties and nations and discussed issues of international and mutual concerns.
They affirmed the importance and strategic meaning of the special relationship between the two Parties and countries for each nation’s sustainability and development and peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
The two leaders consented to closely cooperate in launching the development strategy and join hands in improving the quality and effectiveness of cooperative relations in all fields, especially economic cooperation.
Both sides consented to effectively realize the agreements reached by their high-ranking leaders and Viet Nam-Laos Joint Statement as well as share experience in socio-economic development and international integration and enhancement of communications among people, especially youth about Viet Nam-Laos special relationship.
The two leaders agreed to support each other at international and regional forums, especially at the United Nations, ASEAN and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, continuously strengthen coordination with international organizations related to sustainable water management and use and promote cooperation with Cambodia to effectively launch the agreements of the development triangle mechanism of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia.
Regarding the East Sea issue, the two leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining aeronautical and maritime peace, stability, security, safety and freedom in the East Sea, assenting that territorial and sea disputes in the East Sea must be addressed with peaceful measures in line with the international regulations, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS), and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), heading the formation of a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.
General Secretary, President Bounnhang Vorachith invited Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to pay an official visit to Laos and the Vietnamese leader gladly accepted.
After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of an Agreement on construction of the Lao National Assembly.
