HCM City plans expansion of waterbus network

HCM City plans to expand its water transport network with new waterbus and passenger ferry routes between 2026 and 2030 to improve connectivity and promote river tourism.

According to the city's Department of Construction, the expansion will build on the success of Waterbus Route No. 1, which has operated between Bach Dang Wharf and Linh Dong since 2017 and has recorded steady passenger growth.

Preparations are under way for Waterbus Route No. 2 linking Bach Dang Wharf and Lo Gom. The route is expected to enter service in the 2026-2027 period once related infrastructure projects are completed.

The city is also seeking PPP investment for several new routes, including Bach Dang Wharf-Phu My Hung, Bach Dang Wharf-Mui Den Do-SwanBay, Bach Dang Wharf-Rach Chiec-Eastern VinCity, the Vam Thuat-Tham Luong Canal route and a service linking HCM City with Thu Dau Mot.

Some of the projects are expected to begin implementation from 2026 as part of plans to develop an integrated water transport network linking the city centre with new urban areas and neighbouring localities.

In addition to expanding routes, the city is reviewing plans for inland waterway terminals, improving legal frameworks and investing in supporting infrastructure to enhance passenger transport services.

The Department of Construction said HCM City would continue developing water transport and river tourism services to capitalise on its extensive river network, strengthen regional connectivity and ease pressure on road traffic.

Future plans also include new services linking the city centre with Cu Chi, Lai Thieu, Can Gio, Long Son and Vung Tau, alongside upgrades to river ports and wharves, including Bach Dang Wharf, Hiep Phuoc Port and facilities in Nha Be and Can Gio.
