Two Vietnamese team members (from left) are waiting to receive their prizes at the award ceremony of PROCON, a programming contest, concluding Friday December 23, 2011 in Japan. |
This is the best result Vietnam has ever achieved since it first competed in the contest in 2004.
The two Vietnamese contestants competed in the image restoration category, in which an original photo and its damaged version were provided for each two-person team.
Stamps – hints and codes which helped facilitate the restoration – were available to the contestants, and those who completed their restoration tasks using the smallest number of stamps were the winners.
The Vietnamese team failed to bring home first prize because they used more stamps than champions Kurume – a Japanese technical college.
But the algorithm used by the Vietnamese contestants stunned the audience and many other teams, Dr Hung said.
PROCON is an annual competition dedicated to university and vocational college students under the age of 20.
This year’s event was attended by 60 Japanese teams and four international ones, from Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Mongolia.
Vietnam was the only international country to receive an official prize from the host.
