The erosion of the sea dyke in Ca Mau Province

A 230-metre section running through Khanh Tien Commune in U Minh District suffered two metres of erosion.

According to Le Van Su, vice chairman of Ca Mau Province People’s Committee, the problem may be due to the weak foundation of the dyke which includes too much mud. He added that local authorities will invite an independent consulting firm to find the real cause.

The subsidence is expected to cost VND1 billion (USD45,450) for the province.

The construction of the dyke aimed to protect Ca Mau’s western coast was overseen by the provincial Department of Agricultural and Rural Development.

The local authorities said that the province was suffering from serious erosion and saline intrusion with seawater affecting cultivation land. Meanwhile, the destruction of protective coastal forests and the polluting of the environment had created bad living conditions for the locals.
